더 이상의 살육은 그만두세요!
내전 중 어느 어머니에게 물었다.
“당신은 어느 당을 지지하고 있습니까?”
“모르겠습니다.”
“당신은 공화당인가요, 왕당파인가요? 어느 쪽을 지지하고 있나요?”
“저는 아이들을 지지하고 있어요.”

조용했다. 긴장된 분위기였다. 대성당에는 사람들로 꽉 차 있었다. 로메로 대주교가 무슨 말을 할까? 모두 숨을 죽인 채 기다리고 있었다. 엘살바도르에서는 이미 너무나도 많은 사람이 죽었다. 중미의 이 작은 나라에서 ‘폭력의 공포’가 전 국토를 뒤덮고 있었다. 다음에는 ‘자신의 차례’가 아닐까. 일부 부유층은 게릴라에 의한 유괴와 암살을 우려하고 있었다.
수많은 민중은 정부군의 잔혹한 탄압을 두려워했다. 아무튼 군은 갑자기 쳐들어 와서 게릴라와 아무런 상관도 없는 사람까지 무자비하게 죽이고, 체포해서 고문을 가하고, ‘행방불명자’로 만들어 버리기도 했다.
1975년 수도 산살바도르의 번화가에서 대낮에 학생 20명이 군인에 의해 학살되었다. 1977년에는 폭정에 항의한 신부가 한 명씩 죽어가고, 정부에 반항하는 자는 용서할 수 없다고 ‘본때’를 보여주기 위해 하나의 마을을 전멸시켰다. 그리고 작년에는 여기 수좌대성당 앞에 모인 수백 명의 시민들이 “행방불명된 사람들을 돌려달라”고 외치자 경찰과 국가경비대가 다가와서 일제히 사격을 가했다.
성당 앞 정면 계단은 순식간에 피로 물들었다.
올해 들어서는 ‘하루 평균 10명’의 사상자!
신원을 알 수 없을 정도로 난도질당한 시체가 즐비했다. 원망과 한탄의 소리가 땅을 가득 채웠다. 아버지를 돌려달라. 아들을, 딸을, 어머니를 돌려달라!
1980년 3월 23일 일요일, 로메로 대주교는 입을 열었다.
“일전에 저는 마을에서 걱정스러운 이야기를 들었습니다. 3월 7일, 한밤중에 병사를 가득 실은 트럭이 어느 집을 침입했다고 합니다.”… 병사들은 집안에 있는 사람들을 밖으로 쫓아내고, 소녀 4명을 폭행하고, 부모들을 마구 때리고, 이 사실을 외부에 알리면 가만히 두지 않을 것이라고 위협한 뒤 가버렸다.
대주교는 신문이나 텔레비전에서 보도되지 않은 ‘그 주에 일어난 사건’을 공유했다. 그의 설교는 교회 라디오 방송 프로그램에 의해 국가 전체로 알려졌다. 이웃 나라에 살고 있는 국민들은 라디오 청취를 설정하기 전에 모였다. 폭력 중단을 희망하는 이들이 모이기 시작한 것이다.

It was quiet inside. The air was taut with tension as people packed the cathedral, anxious to hear Archbishop Oscar Romero's sermon.
There had already been far too many deaths in El Salvador. The horror of violence blanketed this small Central American country. People fearfully wondered, "Will I be next?" The tiny minority of the rich lived in fear of the guerilla insurgents, afraid of being kidnapped or killed.
The great majority of ordinary citizens feared the ruthless oppression of government forces. often, the army would appear suddenly and begin rounding people up, including innocent men and women who had nothing to do with the guerrillas. The soldiers were free to kill people on the spot, to arrest and torture them, or simply to 'disappear' them.
In 1975, soldiers had gunned down 20 students in broad daylight on a busy street of the capital, San Salvador. The priests who stood up against these acts of official terror were killed off as well. In 1977, an entire village was massacred as a warning to anyone who dared oppose the government.
And it did not end there. In 1979, several hundred citizens had gathered before the Metropolitan Cathedral to call for the release of the 'disappeared.' When the police and National Guard came and opened fire on the protesters, the steps went red with a river of blood.
Since the start of 1980, killings had averaged ten per day. Rows of bodies mutilated beyond recognition, would be discovered. Voices of outrage and grief swept across the land: "Give us back our fathers, our sons, our daughters, our mothers!"
The sermon was delivered on March 23, a Sunday in 1980.
Archbishop Romeo lifted his voice. "At a (village), I was told a terrible account: On March 7, near midnight, a truck filled with soldiers...broke into a house and threw the entire family out. They raped four young girls, savagely beat their parents and warned that if they said anything, they would pay the consequences."
The archbishop went on sharing the 'events of the week' that had not been reported by the newspapers or television. His sermon was heard by the entire nation, carried on a radio program broadcast by the Church. People living in neighboring countries also gathered before their radio sets to listen.
